A look into the infamous refugee/migrant camp known as "The Jungle". A few kilometers away from the city of Calais in northern France and __ kilometers away from the United Kingdom about 6,000 people were stuck in this truly hopeless excuse of a "camp". Well bellow UNHCR's international standards for Refugee Camps, the Jungle of Calais was shameful monument to Europe's unwillingness and inability to adequately address the Refugee Crisis. Despite the horrible conditions, the indomitable human spirit remained unbowed. These resilient people have been through hell and back, and yet still retain the human qualities which we all share. Using the scarce resources available to them, and with an incredible sense of camaraderie, the people living in The Jungle tried to restore a sense of society to the camp, propping up restaurants, churches, shops, and bars.
These photographs were made in October, 2015 during the peak of the Refugee Crisis, for the American University of Paris's magazine. One year later, on 26 October 2016, French authorities announced that the camp had been cleared.
